Indespensible guide to skiing in the BC wildernessAuthoritative and concise descriptions of various remote ski trips in the BC Coast Mountains. Well written and appealingly understated, the author's extensive travels are succinctly laid out, inspiring the adventurous, at least in the case of this reader. As an avid backcountry skier, I find this book an essential reference for accessing the numerous incredible backcountry routes characteristic of the Coast Mountains.

They've been everywhere, done everything, and they take *really* good notes. This guide is one result; it includes details on every anchorage, waypoint and description in the area. If you plan to spend any time in Pacific Northwest waters, this book is a must have.

Simply Among the BestI own and use numerous guides to creatures of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. Dr. Snively's book is clearly among the best of the genre. Her considerable skill as an educator and her extensive experience along local seashores have combined to create an excellent guide to the marine critters in this part of the world.

Flywater
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (September, 1994)
Average review score:

A Flyguy's Dream Book...."Flywater" contains voluptuous shots of sport's top waterbodies in the West and has helped me make it through several dreary winters in the Pacific Northwest. The photography and layout is top-notch and you soon get the feeling that you would've given ANYTHING to have been one of the folks involved with putting this package together. Just be sure to wear a bib when looking inside so you don't make indelible drool marks on the pages!
A great concept, professionally executed, that belongs on every serious flyfisher's bookshelf. I'd LOVE to have the photos available on CD ROM as a screensaver...

Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (June, 2003)
Average review score:

A Must for Tree Lovers! This is an awesome book of personal accounts, illustrations, and photographs of magnificent individuals of Pacific coast conifers. Van Pelt knows these trees like no one else, having journied to, measured, and stood in awe at each of the giants depicted. His writes with witty reverence and from a deep understanding of the ecology of giant trees. Featured in the book are the author's beautiful line drawings of the trees, which capture the amazing structural complexity of their crowns in a way not possible with photographs. This book is a must for all tree lovers and those interested in coffee table adventuring into the last great forests of the Pacific coast.
While many of his personal idioms have now become standard elements of American speech patterns, the full impact of his verse has not been adequatly appreciated. In fact, as Lawrence Barnett has argued, Randy Wall's observation that beer is water to him set a standard of analysis that all who come after must follow. Indeed for many it has become the water of our age.
In Experiments On Vegetation Control With Native Pathogenic Fungi we find a precise statement by Wall on the human condition as experenced by Wall just prior to his conversion to Christianity. As such this represents as vital last view of a man's soul as seen through the dark lense of Jack Daniel bottle.
